At Caterpillar, we share the concern of governments and the public about the risks of climate change, and we support global efforts to mitigate its impact. So, we’re teaming up with customers to map a successful route to a carbon-reduced future.
Although it’s a tall order, it’s also an exciting time filled with opportunities for Caterpillar and our customers. We’re especially excited about these collaborations because it’s an opportunity to work with customers to help create the future of mine sites while making a positive global impact.
Teck, one of Canada’s leading mining companies, announced an agreement with Caterpillar to advance zero-emission mining haul trucks. Headquartered in Vancouver, Teck has business units focused on copper, zinc, and steelmaking coal. The company also has investments in energy assets.
The agreement is to work with Caterpillar toward deploying 30 Cat® zero-emission large haul trucks, including the Cat® 794.at Teck mining operations. The two companies will work together through a multi-phased approach that includes early development, piloting and deployment.
Caterpillar Group President Denise Johnson added, “We look forward to working with Teck to support their climate goals and developing solutions to increase operational efficiency while substantially reducing emissions. We are excited to strengthen our collaboration and deliver results.”
Deployment will begin at Teck’s Elk Valley operations in British Columbia in 2027. This is set to be the introduction of one of Canada’s first zero-emission large haul truck fleets with options for Caterpillar trolley-assist technology.
Teck is committed to responsible mining and mineral development. The company recognizes its role in shifting to a low-carbon economy and has established a strategy with short-and long-term goals for reducing emissions with a goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050.
Likewise, Caterpillar is committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions while helping our customers meet their climate-related objectives. We recently announced seven new sustainability goals to achieve by 2030.
No doubt, the task before us is big. This agreement between Teck and Caterpillar is another step in working together to build a better world. At Caterpillar, we’ll continue working with customers across the enterprise, developing solutions to enable customer success in reaching both business and environmental goals.
Because that’s what innovators do.
