Transforming the Future of Mining

June 1, 2022

In the modern world, mined minerals have long been intertwined with everyday life. From the time we wake up, flip on the lights and brush our teeth, we’ve already used a list of materials such as copper, steel, aluminum and fluoride.

Beyond personal uses, copper, aluminum and other minerals are critical components in emerging renewable technologies—from wind farms to solar panels to the batteries in electric vehicles. According to recent projections, from 2021 to 2025, the Global Green Technology & Sustainability Market is projected to grow from $11.2 to $36.6 billion.1 To enable that growth, the World Bank Group estimates that by 2050, production of minerals such as graphite, lithium and cobalt could increase by nearly 500%.2

Caterpillar's mining customers are working to enable the energy transition by utilizing safe, productive and sustainable mining solutions. Our company is well-positioned to support customers in this journey—combining the industry’s broadest machine product and automation portfolio with nearly a century of engineering expertise. Here’s how Caterpillar is focused on expanding our product and service offerings to help customers achieve their sustainability and operational goals:

  • Collaboration: Mine sites are complex, and each operation is unique. So, in our relationships with customers, we focus on a specific and collaborative approach to address customers’ unique business challenges. In some cases, a customer's goal requires a product that does not yet exist, so we focus on frontline customer input as Caterpillar designs and develops next-generation solutions to meet their needs.
  • Electrification and alternative fuels: Caterpillar’s engineers are reimagining our machines at mine sites, enhancing them with alternative power sources and ensuring compatibility with renewable fuels. These solutions help customers run more fuel-efficient sites—reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while supporting their total cost of ownership objectives.
  • Connectivity and automation: What customers really want are sites that are safe, predictable and productive. That’s where Caterpillar stands apart from competitors, delivering key autonomy, alternative fuels, connectivity and digital, and electrification (AACE) technologies. Our MineStar technology suite for staffed and automated mines converge to create and maximize value and safety for our customers at the site level. The suite enables Caterpillar and Cat dealer service teams to digitally connect and monitor machine assets, alerting site managers to predictive maintenance opportunities that enhance safety, productivity and profitability. They also allow for optimized energy management, as the site functions as a connected system.

Breakthrough Customer Collaborations

Bringing these factors together, Caterpillar signed a series of transformative agreements with key mining customers in 2021. Through these collaborative agreements, we are developing and deploying customized, site-specific solutions to achieve our customers’ bold sustainability objectives to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at their sites. Here are a few of our breakthrough projects that are pushing the mining industry forward:

Helping Nouveau Monde Graphite Build a Zero-Emissions, Open Pit Mine

In June, Nouveau Monde Graphite (NMG)  — a supplier to battery and automobile manufacturers  — announced an agreement with Caterpillar to be the exclusive supplier of an all-electric mining fleet. NMG will deploy the fleet at their Matawinie graphite project in Saint-Michel-des-Saints, Québec, Canada, by 2028, supporting their goal to fully power the site with a zero-carbon renewable energy footprint.

Teaming Up to Develop Zero-Exhaust Emissions Autonomous Trucks with Rio Tinto

In September, Rio Tinto — a global mining company that produces iron ore, aluminum, copper, titanium and borates — announced a collaboration agreement to advance Caterpillar’s development of the 793 zero-exhaust emissions autonomous haul truck for use at one of Rio Tinto’s Western Australian mining operations. The agreement supports Rio Tinto’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Rio Tinto has also deployed a fleet of autonomous 793F trucks plus the world’s first fully autonomous water truck at the site, the Cat 789D.

Accelerating Development of Caterpillar Zero-Exhaust Emissions Mining Trucks with BHP

In August, BHP — a leading provider of copper, iron ore and nickel — announced an agreement to accelerate Caterpillar’s development of zero-exhaust emissions, battery-powered, large mining trucks to be deployed at BHP sites. The fleet will support BHP’s goal of achieving net-zero operational GHG emissions by 2050.

Advancing Zero-Emissions Mining with Newmont

In November, Newmont — the world’s largest gold mining company — announced a revolutionary strategic alliance with Caterpillar to deliver a fully connected, automated, zero-carbon emitting, end-to-end mining system to support the company’s target of 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The alliance intends to deliver battery electric autonomous machines in both an underground and open pit operation by 2027. Caterpillar will develop our first battery-electric zero-exhaust emissions underground truck, which Newmont will deploy. This truck will complement the Cat R1700 XE, our battery electriczero-exhaust emissions underground loader, providing a fully electric underground load and haul solution.

Engineering Sustainable Products and Services

One of Caterpillar’s new sustainability goals for 2030 is to make every product more sustainable than the previous generation. To deliver on that goal, Caterpillar’s global team of engineers are upgrading our best-in-class designs with cutting-edge product innovations. Examples include:

R1700 XE Zero-Exhaust Emissions Battery Electric Underground Loader

Hitting the sweet spot of technology, our new R1700 XE zero-exhaust emissions battery electric underground loader delivers both the power and payload of its R1700 LHD counterpart while eliminating exhaust emissions. The loader is powered by onboard batteries for safer, simpler charging, with the help of our easily transportable MEC500 mobile equipment charger. It can run via line-of-sight remote control and is equipped with autonomous capability. Today, we can keep operators out of harm’s way and enable the machines to be operated from the surface.

789D Autonomous Water Truck

Mine sites require water to keep dust down on haul roads, but the proper amount can be tough to gauge. Using too little water and dust can become a potential safety hazard, yet excess amounts can cause slippery conditions. Enter the 789D autonomous water truck, our first fully integrated solution, designed with customer Rio Tinto. Using an automated water tank, the truck determines appropriate water flow based on its speed, and our MineStar technology allows for smarter monitoring and remote management. Compared to conventional systems, it reduces water consumption by up to 50%.

D11 XE Dozer

Our first electric drive large mining dozer, the D11XE, is still in the prototype phase and being tested at our Caterpillar Proving Grounds. The dozer includes a new electric drive system engineered for best-in-class maneuverability and power capability. And it’s a game-changer for productivity and fuel efficiency — using up to 25% less fuel per unit of moved material — helping customers cut costs and GHG emissions.
