“It is a priority to invest in the education and empowerment of young women who will one day become the leaders of our community, promoting STEM careers as a means to achieve progress,” said Luis H., Operations Manager.
More than 300 students from high schools and universities in the Monterrey, N.L., Mexico, area gathered to attend Caterpillar and United Way Mexico’s first “Educating Girls Changes the World” event. Together with company managers, teaching staff and volunteers, students participated in interactive activities and networking opportunities. The event was also accompanied by a Hackathon, allowing students to develop solutions for water preservation and various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) workshops.
The theme of the event revolved around the promotion of STEM careers to improve lives and offer information on career options available within the different fields. Female STEM experts shared their inspiring stories and experiences to empower local students to continue their studies and become passionate about STEM leadership – ultimately contributing to the social progress of the region. Overall, the event was held as part of a broader goal to empower young women in the community to explore educational and career opportunities.
Students who participated in the five-week Hackathon following the event were also recognized for their innovative projects focused on the development of alternatives to improve water conservation in the region. The students were mentored by a team of Caterpillar volunteers who are specialized in education and social change.
